Presidential Elections in Uruguay Head to Second Round

On October 26th, Uruguay held its presidential, vice presidential, and parliamentary elections. The previous president, José “Pepe” Mujica, was not able to run since it is not permissible for a president to serve two consecutive terms. Running in his place was the Broad Front candidate, Tabare Vazquez, who comes from the same political party as Mujica. The Broad Front, or the Frente Amplio as its known in Uruguay, is a center leftist group with many former communists and guerrilla leaders.

Morales Rides Economic Boom, to Stay in Power Until 2020

On Sunday October 12th, Bolivia held their national elections for the legislature and the presidency. In a landslide victory, incumbent Evo Morales of the Movement for Socialism Party won his third consecutive election with 59 percent of the vote.  The strongest opposition to Morales was Samuel Doria of the Democratic Union who received approximately 30 percent of the vote.

Peace Talks Underway Between Colombian Government and FARC

Peace talks in Havana, Cuba between the Colombian rebel group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), and the Colombian government have been underway since August in an effort to end the five-decade-long war between the two groups. Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos authorized the leader of FARC, Rodrigo Londoño Echeverry, also known by his war name as Timochenko, to visit Cuba twice in the last three months in order to negotiate the terms of a potential peace treaty.1

The Multiple Causes of the Border Crisis

Much was written and discussed in the Summer of 2014 about the causes of the migration of thousands of undocumented minors and women with young children from Central America’s Northern Triangle region (Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras) to the United States.1 Many analysts focused on finding "the culprit", the one single cause that provoked the dramatic increase in the number of children arriving at the border and turning themselves to US authorities.
