Naming Controversy Surrounding Parran Hall

In light of the developing national debate on whether or not we should celebrate historical figures with problematic pasts, Parran Hall, the main building for the University of Pittsburgh’s Graduate School of Public Health, has recently come under scrutiny due to the legacy of the man it is named after. Filmmaker Alex Rivera Visits University of Pittsburgh

Peruvian-American award winning filmmaker Alex Rivera is known for his work portraying themes and issues that concern the Latino subject. His art focuses on topics such as migration, globalization, economics, politics and technology. Although much of his work uses Mexican subjects to illustrate these issues, his films highlight broader global social, economic, and political problems.

On February 11, University of Pittsburgh students and faculty had the unique pleasure of meeting the award-winning, Peruvian-American filmmaker Alex Rivera. He attended a public and several private classroom screenings of his feature film, Sleep Dealer (2008). Rivera’s presence provoked many thoughtful questions and conversations. He discussed topics ranging from the original inspiration of his film to the future of civil society protest.

Body and Community Mapping Workshop Held at University of Pittsburgh

Dr. Elizabeth Sweet, visiting assistant professor at Temple University, led the Body and Community Mapping Workshop organized by GSPIA’s Dr. Marcela González Rivas on February 28, 2014. About 15 students from the departments of sociology, anthropology, public health, and GSPIA attended the workshop. Dr. Sweet's research has focused on internally displaced women in Colombia, trying to understand the individual and community costs of displacement and identify factors that would help in creating roots in new places or alleviate the need to relocate.

Filmmakers Julio Ramos and Alex Schlenker to Visit Pittsburgh

This Friday, April 11th, the University of Pittsburgh will host documentary filmmakers Julio Ramos and Alex Schlenker for screenings and discussions of selected films. “The Poetics of Rediscovery: New Paths in Latin American Documentary” symposium will take place from 10AM-6PM in the Frick Fine Arts’ Auditorium.

Hispanic Heritage Month Talk: Public Health

On September 24, 2015 at the University of Pittsburgh’s medical school, doctors Patricia Documét and Diego Chaves-Gnecco gave updates on their projects that focus on Latino health care in the Pittsburgh region. Documét, MD, DrPH, is involved with Latino Engagement Group for Salud (LEGS), and much of her work includes community health workers, or “promotores” in Spanish.
