Mitchell A. Seligson, LAPOP, and the slipping support for democracy in Latin America

On Friday, January 19, Pitt’s Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) and the University Center for International Studies (UCIS) had the pleasure of hosting a lecture by Mitchell A. Seligson, Centennial Professor of Political Science, Alexander Heard Distinguished Service Professor, and Professor of Sociology (by courtesy) at Vanderbilt University. Seligson is also an elected member of the General Assembly of the Inter-American Institute of Human Rights, and is best known for founding the Latin American Public Opinion Project, or LAPOP.

50th CLAS Gala Receives Recognition of its Accomplishments in the Press

The gala that celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Center for Latin American Studies (CLAS) on September 12 was featured in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in the Sunday edition of the newspaper. Over 150 people were in attendance, including every former director of the Center (as shown in the picture above).  

Panoramas Round Table Discusses Latino Immigration to Pittsburgh

For the first Panoramas Round Table of the 2014-2015 school year, the Center for Latin American Studies brought in a group of panelists to discuss immigration issues. The four panelists, Kimi Bennett, Alfonso Barquera, Megan Walker, and Joanna Bernstein, all work with immigrants from Latin America in Pittsburgh and discussed their experiences and knowledge of the issue with the audience.
