YANINA WELP is Regional Director for Latin America at the Centre for Research on Direct Democracy (Zentrum für Demokratie Aarau, University of Zurich). She has completed a PhD in Political and Social Sciences at the Pompeu Fabra University (Barcelona, Spain) and holds a degree in Political Science and in Social Communication Science, both from the University of Buenos Aires. Her main areas of study are the mechanisms of direct and participatory democracy in Latin America and digital media and politics.

Yordan K. Kutiyski is an MSc graduate of political science from the VU University Amsterdam and holds a MA degree in Latin American studies from the Centre of Latin American Research and Documentation (CEDLA) at the University of Amsterdam. He is currently the academic research coordinator of Kieskompas (Election Compass). His research interests include electoral behavior and Latin American politics with a focus on Venezuela, where he has conducted fieldwork research.

Yu Xiao is a PhD student in the Political Science Department at the University of Pittsburgh, originally from Liaoning Province in the northeast of China. She received her B.A. in Philosophy from Peking University in 2008 and her M.A. in Comparative Politics from New York University in 2010. She is interested in comparative political economy in developing countries, with a regional focus on Latin America and China. She has been studying party ideologies and their effects on the design of legislatures in the single-party authoritarian regimes. Now she is studying political conditions for decentralization in authoritarian regimes. |

Yvon Grenier (Ph.D. Université Laval, 1989) is Professor of Political Science at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, Canada. He is the author of Guerre et pouvoir au Salvador (Les Presses de l’Université Laval, 1994), The Emergence of Insurgency in El Salvador (University of Pittsburgh Press, 1999), Art and Politics: Octavio Paz and the Pursuit of Freedom (Rowman and Littlefield, 2001; Spanish trans. for the Fondo de Cultura Económica in 2004), and co-author with Maarten Van Delden of Gunshots at the Fiesta: Literature and Politics in Latin America (Vanderbilt University Press, 2009, 2012). He edited (selection of texts and introduction) a book of political essays by the Mexican Nobel laureate Octavio Paz, entitled Sueño en libertad, escritos políticos (Seix Barral, 2001). Professor Grenier was editor of the Canadian Journal of Latin American and Caribbean Studies and he is contributing editor of the magazine Literal Magazine, Latin American Voices. |
