ROLAND ARMANDO ALUM, is a New Jersey-based [external] Research Associate in anthropology with the Univ. of Pittsburgh’s Center for Latin American Studies, from which he graduated, also received a Post-Doctoral Certificate from the Univ. of Virginia. A former Fulbright scholar in the Dominican Republic, he is a Fellow of the Society for Applied Anthropology, a trustee of DeVry Univ.-N.J., and vice-chair of both, the N.J. Certified Psychoanalysts Committee and the N.J. Center for Hispanic Policy, Research & Development. He has taught at several colleges/universities in the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Dominican Rep. , and has in addition held N.J.-State & Federal high level executive and pro bono posts. His over 135 writings–-in English & Spanish—have been published in U.S. and foreign scholarly journals, books, encyclopedias, and newspapers. Dr. Valente is a Visiting Lecturer in the Department of Sociology at Princeton University and a Research Associate at the School of Economic, Political, and Policy Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas (UT Dallas). In the Fall, she will be joining the faculty at Baruch College of the City University of New York (CUNY). Dr. Valente received her B.A. in International Relations from Southern Methodist University, and her Master degree in International Political Economy and Ph.D. in Public Policy and Political Economy from UT Dallas. Dr. Valente’s research interests reside in using quantitative methods to examine economic and social development issues, with a special focus in Latin America and Brazil. Her main interest lies in the socioeconomic inequalities due to race, class and gender in the context of social, political, and religious institutions. She also studies happiness (a.k.a., well-being, quality of life, life satisfaction), and is interested in social movements and political protests. Dr. Valente has published in many peer-reviewed journals such as the Geographical Review, Cities - The International Journal of Urban Policy and Planning, Journal of Happiness Studies, Race Ethnicity and Education, Latin American and Caribbean Ethnic Studies, Applied Research in Quality of Life, Journal of Brazilian Studies (Brasiliana), PentecoStudies, and the Journal of the Society for Pentecostal Studies (PNEUMA). |

Dr. Rut Diamint is professor at Torcuato Di Tella University and researcher at the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research. She has served as chief of cabinet and advisor to the Argentine Ministry of Defense (2003–2005). She coordinated projects for the Ford Foundation and Open Society Foundations on defense issues, security, political leadership, and democracy. Her books include Democratizing Politicians: A Study of Latin American Leaders (2013) and sin Gloria. La política de defensa en la Argentina democrática (2014). She was appointed on the UN Secretary General’s Advisory Board on Disarmament Matters (2013–2015). |

Ryan Salzman is Assistant Professor of Political Science at Northern Kentucky University in the Department of Political Science, Criminal Justice, and Organizational Leadership. His scholarship focuses on the development of democratic individuals in Latin America, with a particular interest in understanding the effects of media use. Santiago Juan-Navarro is a Professor of Hispanic Literature and Film at Florida International University, where he currently serves as Associate Chair in the Department of Modern Languages. His recent books include Nuevas aproximaciones al cine hispánico: Migraciones temporales, textuales y étnicas en el bicentenario de las independencias iberoamericanas (1810-2010), Juana of Castile: History and Myth of the Mad Queen, La ciudad en la literatura y el cine, and Memoria histórica, género e interdisciplinariedad: los estudios culturales hispánicos en el siglo XXI. He has published and lectured extensively on Cuban and Spanish cinema. He is currently working in a monograph entitled History, Myth, and Propaganda: The Spanish-Cuban-American War Goes to the Movies.
