Cinthya L. Viñals

Please explain what you do for living.

I married on May 2016 so I am living with my husband. I am working in H&R Block since December 2016. I was studying English until I found this job. I still want to keep improving my English so I can find a better job in the future.

How important in your identity is being Latino?

It is so important because it is my roots, it is my being, my language, my thinking, my culture, my traditions.

Is there something that you particularly value of your nationality or being Latino?

The most valuable thing in my being Argentine is the importance we give to family and friends. The family stays in the same city, so all celebrations are big with lots of friends and family together. The children live with their parents longer than here, for example I lived with my parents until 32. Also, in Argentina, gatherings with family and friends are more spontaneous, so they are not always planned in advance.

Have you been treated differently because of being Latino (in the workplace, in public settings…etc.)?

Since December, I have been living in Pittsburgh. In general I have been comfortable, but when I have visited McDonald’s or a cafe, the employees are not prepared to serve the tourist. Often they don´t understand me (because of my bad pronunciation of English) and they don´t change, or don’t speak slower so that I can understand. Some do not have the patience to listen to different accents and others are very kind people. But in general I don´t have problems.
